Fort du Barbonnet

Col Saint-Jean - route de Nice 06380 Sospel
Col Saint-Jean - route de Nice 06380 Sospel

A key part of the Maginot line culminating at 847 m., it houses numerous artillery pieces, and a museum on the armies of the Alps has been developed there. A very interesting outlook over the Authion alpine range over the Mediterranean.

Built at the top of the Mount Barbonnet at 847 meters high, it blocked the Bévéra valley and the Col de Braus, thus protecting Nice. This summit was fortified multiple times.
Its mission was to prevent an invasion of Nice by monitoring the Bévéra valley, the Col de Castillon and the Col de Braus.
After a video presentation with commentary, the tour begins with the top of the structure, then moves on to the interior galleries (caponiers, cross-beam shelters), the Mougin turret, the barracks rooms (kitchen, bakery) and the museum rooms.
