A rich and captivating historical heritage

Did you know that the name "Samoëns" dates back to the year 1167?

The history of Samoëns actually dates back to the Middle Ages. The village was then located on an important trade route linking France and Switzerland, and was known for its craftsmen, particularly for the production of woollen fabrics.

Samoëns is also the birthplace of stonemasons, a local specialty with a long history. Particularly renowned for their expertise, stonemasons have left their mark on the village's architecture over the centuries, including the fountain in Place du Gros Tilleul, the churches of Nativité-de-Marie and Saint-Jacques, and numerous traditional chalets and farmhouses.

Some artisans still carry on this tradition and know-how today, which was moreover recognized in 2015 by inclusion in France's inventory of intangible cultural heritage
