What luggage do you need for mountain biking?
Luggage: The Secret of Successful Roaming
You've chosen your roaming bike? Now it's time for the luggage - an element as crucial as the bike itself.
Good luggage must be light, resistant, waterproof and above all well-organized to make your adventures easier.
At Grandes Itinérances, we've tested dozens of panniers in real-life conditions to offer you a selection that's 100% reliable. Follow the guide.
Our Luggage Advice
The weight of panniers
Every gram counts in the mountains. Choose panniers made of lightweight but resistant materials such as Cordura or ripstop nylon.
Our golden rule: never exceed 10-12 kg of luggage (excluding bikes).
Waterproofing
In the mountains, the weather changes quickly. Your panniers must be 100% waterproof:
- Heat-sealed seams (no stitched seams)
- Waterproof zippers (ex: YKK AquaGuard)
- Rabats with tightening straps to prevent water seeping in
Our tip: double up with a freezer bag for sensitive stuff.
Ease of attachment
Nothing's more annoying than panniers that move or unhook on a descent.
- Prefer Quick-Lock systems (Ortlieb) or hook-and-loop straps
- Check compatibility with your luggage rack
Easy access
When traveling, you often need quick access to your stuff.
- Choose panniers with wide openings ("roll-top" type)
- For saddlebags/handlebars: favor quick-opening models
Extra straps
A pro tip: always keep spare straps.
- A strap breaks? Loose hook? With extra straps, you're all set
- Prefer polypropylene straps (more resistant)
Small additional volumes
Don't underestimate small additional bags.
- They help distribute weight and keep frequent items close at hand
- Ex: energy gel in the top tube bag, phone in the fanny pack
The pro's trick: Clear protect tape
A must-have for protecting your frame from scratches: 3M clear tape.
- Stick it on contact areas (straps, frame bags)
- Invisible, ultra-resistant, and it avoids unsightly marks
Our Loading Tips
"Everything has its place, every place has its thing"
This old sailor's saying applies perfectly to bicycles.
- Always store the same things in the same place
- Use waterproof bags to organize your belongings by category
Weight balance
A poorly loaded bike is an unstable and dangerous bike.
- 60% of weight at the rear (on the luggage rack)
- 30% at the front (handlebar panniers/fork)
- 10% on the frame/seat (light and frequent stuff)
To avoid: overloading the front (risk of "fishtailing" on descents).
Total laden weight
Beware: most bikes are limited to 120 kg all-inclusive.
- Weigh your panniers before setting off (max 10-12 kg for luggage)
- For larger people (>80 kg): check the max bike load
Group travel?
Optimize space by sharing common equipment.
- 1 tent for 2 = split the parts (canvas on one side, poles on the other)
- Tools: 1 repair kit for 2-3 people
- Food: share heavy ingredients (e.g. 1 stove for 2)
