Classic bikes: For pedal purists!

Do you like to feel the road, hear the wind and feel every meter of ascent? Classic bikes are for you!

We've selected models that are sturdy, comfortable and able to carry your luggage without flinching. Because in the mountains, a bike needs to be as tough as you!"

A little friendly advice: always check with your panniers loaded before setting off. A light bike empty can become a nightmare when full!

VAEs: For hills without the hassle!

Like landscapes, but 10% hills scare you? The VAEs (electrically assisted bicycles) are made for you!

With a good VAE, you can avale the gradients without arriving exhausted, and enjoy the adventure to the full. But be careful: in the mountains, you need to choose a model with a powerful battery (500Wh minimum) and a engine adapted to steep gradients.

Small downside: VAEs are heavier (20-25 kg), so plan for ultra-performance brakes and wide tires for stability.

Our tips for VAEs in the mountains

VAEs are magic... but they require a bit of adaptation! Here are our professional tips:

  • 600Wh battery minimum: In the mountains, autonomy melts like snow in the sun. If you're planning long stages, consider an extra battery or a solar charger.
  • Manage your assistance : In "Eco" mode, you'll go slower, but much further. Reserve the "Turbo" mode for the passes!"
  • Powerful brakes : With 20-25 kg to stop, hydraulic 4-piston brakes are a must.
  • Wide tires : 40mm minimum for good grip and comfort.
  • Train yourself : A VAE, that's something to master! Do a few loaded rides before the big departure.
  • Specific repair kit : Carry a multimeter to check the battery and a set of Allen keys for adjustments.

Our clever tip:On descents, cut the assistance to save battery power (and enjoy the glide!).

The must-have accessories for roaming

A good bike is great... but without the accessories, your adventure could turn into a nightmare! Here's our checklist of essentials:

Luggage rack

To carry your stuff without unbalancing the bike. We recommend Ortlieb or Tubus models: sturdy and lightweight!

See at Alltricks

Mudguards

Indispensable for riding without arriving soaked (even in a little rain). The SKS are top notch!

See at Decathlon

Lighting

A powerful front light (200 lumens min) and a blinking rear light to be visible. We love the Lezyne!!

Repair kit

Inner tube, tire iron, mini-pump, multi-tool... Don't leave home without it!

Our smart tip:Also pack a lightweight cadena (for coffee breaks) and a USB power strip to recharge your devices!

Bike preparation: The ultimate checklist!

Have you chosen your bike? Great! But before you set off, there are some essential steps to avoid the hassles. We guide you step by step. 🛠️

1. The professional overhaul

Have your bike professionally overhauled before you set off: brakes, transmission, wheels, and tightening of all fasteners.

  • Transmission: Chain, cassette, derailleurs (poor adjustment = guaranteed trouble).
  • Brakes: Worn pads? Warped discs? Replace without hesitation.
  • Wheels : Spokes tight, rims straight, tires in good condition.
  • Fixings : Luggage rack, pedals, stem... Everything must be tight as possible.
  • Steering : A play in the steering = danger. Have it checked!

Where to have it checked? At a bike travel specialist (they know the specific problems).

2. The postural study

A bad position = pain (back, knees, hands) and premature fatigue. A postural study is an investment in your comfort and health!

We recommend Shimano Bikefitting: a complete analysis to adjust saddle, handlebars, shims and avoid injury.

Complete study (1h30-2h)

Morphological analysis + precise adjustments + detailed report.

Price: €200

See at Matériel-Vélo

Adjusting wedges (30-45 min)

To avoid tendinitis and optimize your pedaling.

Price: 90 €

See at Alltricks

Our advice: Do the study with your shoes and panniers for a realistic position.

3. Testing in real-life conditions

Don't leave home without testing your bike in real-life situations! Here's our checklist of tests:

  • Ride loaded: Put 10-15 kg in your panniers and go for a 50 km ride. Check balance, comfort, handling.
  • Try repairs:
    • Change a inner tube (even with gloves on).
    • Repairing a broken chain.
    • Adjusting a derailleur.
  • Test in the rain:Do your mudguards protect enough? Are your brakes holding up well?
  • Check the range (for VAEs): Ride a route with gradients to see how the battery performs.
  • Sleep with your bike : OK, not literally... But do a night's bivouac to test the assembly/disassembly of the bags.

Our tip: Carry a logbook to note any settings that need adjusting.

4. The bike first-aid kit

Here's what you absolutely must have in your saddlebags:

  • Tools: Multi-tool (with spoke wrench), tire iron, mini-pump, chain ripper.
  • Spare parts : 1 inner tube, 1 derailleur hanger, 2 quick links, patches.
  • Products : Chain grease, degreaser, rag.
  • Electronics: Charging cable, external battery, headlamp.
  • Miscellaneous: Padlock, IGN map, first-aid kit.

Our favorite kit: The Topeak Alien II kit + a Park Tool patch kit.
