They-they crossed the Alps and they-they tell...
What motivated you to embark on a bike trip through the Alps?
I already had experience of a touring adventure, but on a mountain bike. This time I wanted to test myself over several days on a road bike and see some fantastic scenery...
Which route did you take and why?
The original route with the only variation being via the Col de la Bonnette. This itinerary did not allow us to do the Col de la Cayolle, Valberg and the Col de la Couillole.
How did you organize your trip?
In ultra light mode! For accommodation, I opted for gites or Airbnb. A few bars in the bag for munchies and purchases in bakeries or supermarkets to ensure meals.
Your best memory? And the worst?
My best memory is arriving at the top of the Col des Saisies, then descending to Beaufort-sur-Doron under the benevolent gaze of Mont-Blanc.
My worst memory: the climb to Tignes I made after the Cormet de Roselend. Between heat and dehydration, the climb to Tignes 2000 was hell.
Your trifecta of passes?
In 1, le Galibier (far ahead) for its mythical side and breathtaking scenery (especially the view of the Meije and Ecrins at the summit)
In 2, the Cormet de Roselend for its sublime lake
And in 3 the Col de Turini, for its lace-ups and wild side.
Ane anecdote to share?
Dantesque day on the ascent of la Bonnette with wind, rain, fog and thunderstorms.
